Siaya Senator and veteran ODM party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has traded political rhetoric for boxing banter.
In a video that has sent Kenyan social media into a frenzy, the senior politician is seen jumping on the ‘Weka Mawe’ (put stones) viral trend.
Internet boxing sensation Mbavu Destroyer originally coined the slang. It has since become the rallying cry for his supporters as he prepares for a highly anticipated showdown.

Mastering the Slang
In the short clip, Dr. Oginga is seen in high spirits. He mimics the aggressive yet humorous tone of the boxer, repeatedly chanting the catchphrase ‘Weka Mawe!’ while mimicking boxing movements.
The video captures a lighthearted moment between the Senator and a companion in a green dress, who encourages the chant.
“Hii ni mbaya, weka mawe, mbwekse,” the two are seen chanting before the lady encourages young people not to forget to register as voters.
The Road to April 4
The ‘Weka Mawe’ craze is directly tied to the upcoming boxing match between Mbavu Destroyer and his rival, Majembe.
Scheduled for April 4, 2026, the fight has evolved from social media banter to a major national event.

Promoted by media personality Oga Obinna, the match has even caught the attention of President William Ruto, who recently pledged financial support and 2,000 tickets for the event.
"It's not even a market—this is a different type of 'stone'," President Ruto remarked when briefed on the upcoming 'Weka Mawe' showdown.
From the Streets to the Senate
The origin of the phrase comes from Mbavu Destroyer’s theatrical training videos. In these clips, he is often seen being hit with actual stones or lifting heavy objects to prove his toughness.
Analysts suggest that such engagement helps veteran politicians remain relatable to a younger, more digitally active electorate.
As the countdown to April 4 continues, the ‘Weka Mawe’ movement shows no signs of slowing down. With both the President and senior opposition figures like Oburu Oginga acknowledging the trend, the boxing ring is set for one of the most-watched entertainment events of the year.
