The world of Kenyan politics and sports entertainment has collided in a viral social media moment. Siaya Senator and veteran ODM party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga recently traded his usual political rhetoric for boxing banter.

In a lighthearted video, the senior politician was seen mimicking boxing moves and chanting the popular slang "Weka Mawe."

The clip quickly went viral, capturing the attention of the official promoter for the upcoming April 4th boxing match, Oga Obinna.

The Million-Shilling Demand

Following the release of the video, media personality and promoter Oga Obinna reposted the clip with a direct financial demand.

Obinna’s response was clear and pointed towards the commercial value of the brand. He asked where he should collect a sum of one million shillings for the use of the catchphrase.

“Very nice, now nikujie 1M wapi? Mkitumia slogan mnasupport the battle,” Obinna said.

The 'Weka Mawe' Phenomenon

The phrase "Weka Mawe," which translates to "put stones," has become a national sensation. It was originally coined by internet boxing star Mbavu Destroyer.

The slang serves as a rallying cry for his supporters as he prepares for a high-stakes showdown.

The origin of the phrase is rooted in Mbavu Destroyer’s theatrical and physically demanding training videos. In these clips, the boxer is often seen being hit with actual stones or lifting heavy objects to prove his toughness to his audience.

Political Relatability and Presidential Support

Dr. Oginga is not the only high-profile figure to acknowledge the trend. The movement has reached the highest levels of government. President William Ruto has officially pledged his support for the event scheduled for 4 April 2026.

The President has promised financial backing and the purchase of 2,000 tickets for the showdown between Mbavu Destroyer and his rival, Majembe.

The video of the Senator shows him in high spirits alongside a companion in a green dress. While the duo used the moment to encourage young people to register as voters, the commercial focus has now shifted to the promoter’s demand.

As the countdown to the April 4th match continues, the "Weka Mawe" movement shows no signs of slowing down.
