Action between Kisii Rugby and Mean Machine at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho/ANGWENYI GICHANA

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Cougars have vowed not to relinquish their grip on the KRU Championship summit as the race for promotion intensifies.

Head coach Smith Muhoya believes his side is well placed to secure a home semi-final with three matches remaining in the regular season.

The Cougars face Kisii Rugby, Western Bulls and the United States International University Africa (USIU-A) Martials in what he terms manageable fixtures.

JKUAT surged to the top of the standings after edging former Kenya Cup side Mwamba Rugby 33-23 in a high-octane clash in Juja on Saturday.

“It was a good game. With three games to go, we want to maintain the tempo and confirm a home semi-final. Our target is to qualify for the Kenya Cup next season,” said Muhoya.

The Cougars, unbeaten after seven matches, sit top with 34 points. Mwamba dropped to second on 31 points, level with Catholic Monks. JKUAT next travel to Cardinal Otunga High School in Mosocho to face Kisii Rugby, who boast an unbeaten home record and will be keen to protect it.

Elsewhere, Catholic Monks climbed to third following an 18-10 win over newcomers National Youth Service (NYS) Spades at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) grounds in Karen.

Former Kenya Cup side South Coast Pirates maintained fourth place after a 22-13 victory over Zetech University Oaks, while Homeboyz Rugby returned to the playoff bracket with a narrow 15-13 win over Kisii Rugby at the RFUEA Grounds. The defeat saw Kisii slip to seventh.

Host Mombasa RFC compounded the struggles of USIU-A Martials with a 22-10 win at Mombasa Sports Club, while at the University of Nairobi, Mean Machine defeated bottom-placed Western Bulls 18-9.

With two promotion slots to the Kenya Cup up for grabs and two relegation places looming in the Nationwide League, the battle at both ends of the table is entering a decisive phase.
