Former Vice Chief of the General Staff, retired Lieutenant General Daniel Opande, has been conferred the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel by Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio.
Opande was feted during the country’s Armed Forces Day and Investiture Ceremony on February 18.
The award recognises Opande’s outstanding service, sacrifice, and leadership, alongside other Kenyan soldiers, in restoring peace and stability in Sierra Leone. Speaking after receiving the honour, Opande dedicated the award to all Kenyan soldiers serving in peacekeeping missions worldwide.
Speaking after receiving the honour, Opande dedicated the award to all Kenyan soldiers serving in peacekeeping missions worldwide.
“I accept this award on behalf of all Kenyan soldiers who continue to serve in challenging environments to uphold peace and security. Their sacrifices and dedication inspire the next generation of military personnel,” he said.

Opande is widely acknowledged as a central figure in Sierra Leone’s journey to peace, having served as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) from November 2000 to 2003.
During this period, he led one of the United Nations’ most complex peacekeeping operations, successfully overseeing the disarmament of rebel forces and helping to end the civil war, stabilise the country, and guide it toward lasting recovery.
While receiving the award, Opande was praised for his leadership was critical in ensuring that the peace agreement was implemented and that the Sierra Leonean people could return to normalcy after years of conflict.
The award ceremony coincided with the anniversary of the official end of the Sierra Leone Civil War in 2002, a day set aside to honour the contributions and sacrifices of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) in past conflicts, including the World Wars, the decade-long civil war of the 1990s, and current international missions.
Throughout his distinguished military career, Opande also commanded United Nations peacekeeping operations in Namibia, Mozambique, and Liberia, cementing his reputation as a respected leader in international security and conflict resolution.
In Namibia, he contributed to the successful implementation of the UN Transition Assistance Group during the country’s independence process.

In Mozambique, he helped oversee peacekeeping efforts following the civil war, and in Liberia, he led contingents in stabilisation missions during the post-conflict reconstruction phase.
The investiture ceremony featured military parades and formal recognition of individuals and units that had contributed to peace and security, both domestically and internationally.
President Bio, who serves as Sierra Leone’s Commander-in-Chief, presided over the event, highlighting the importance of commemorating past sacrifices while acknowledging ongoing efforts to maintain regional stability.
Reflecting on the honour, Opande said, “Peace is achieved not by one person alone but through collective effort. This award recognises the commitment of all Kenyan soldiers who serve under the UN and other missions, bringing stability and hope to war-torn regions.”
