Sheila Kwamboka, popularly known as Kwambox, has a blunt message for those thinking about leaving their jobs to start a business.

Months after her high-profile exit from the radio airwaves, the former Kiss 100 FM presenter took to her Instagram stories to share the "tough love" she has learned as an entrepreneur.

Her advice was simple: if you have a job, keep it.

The reality of the 'hustle'

Kwambox admitted that life outside employment has been more demanding than she expected.

"I thought I was going to work less," she told her followers. Instead, she found that business actually brought her out of "retirement" because of the sheer amount of work involved.

The veteran media personality warned that the grass is not always greener on the other side. She highlighted the heavy emotional and financial burden that comes with running a private venture.

"If you're employed, just stay there. Business is, I think, the toughest thing, owing people money."

A challenging economic landscape

Kwambox noted that the business environment has become increasingly difficult over the last two to three years.

She pointed out that even large corporations are sometimes refusing to pay their debts, creating a suspenseful environment for small business owners.

Finding capital is another major hurdle. While she noted that the country is full of great ideas, she explained that securing funding is a different story.

She joked about needing a "ghai fafa fund" to cushion herself from the shock realities of being self-employed.

Focusing on mental health

Beyond the financial struggles, Kwambox urged her audience to prioritise their mental well-being. She shared that the pressure to make a business work can be crushing.

She mentioned seeing reports of people losing their property to auctions or even taking their own lives due to business stress.

"Take care of yourself. You only have one body, one mind," she advised. She encouraged business owners to have grace for themselves and to be patient when things do not go as planned.

"When you see a business person, respect their business and mind your business."

The end of a radio era

This shift into the business world follows a long and successful career in the Kenyan media. Kwambox hosted her final show on Kiss 100 FM on 30 April 2025.

Her departure, alongside co-host Kerry Martin, marked the end of a significant chapter. For Kwambox, radio had been her identity for 13 years.

While she has not yet revealed her next major move, she continues to encourage others by sharing her own journey, even when things are tough.
