Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata will stay away from physical office engagements for about a month after sustaining a heel tendon injury while attending a meeting in Nairobi.

In a statement issued by the Murang’a County Government, the governor sustained an injury on Wednesday after he tripped while attending a Nutrition International meeting.

The session brought together stakeholders to discuss ongoing nutrition and public health programmes supported by the Canadian government-funded organisation.

“Murang’a County Government wishes to inform the public that H.E. Gov. Irungu Kang’ata was today attending a Nutrition International meeting in Nairobi when he unfortunately tripped and sustained an injury to his heel tendons,” the statement said.

Following a medical assessment, the county said Kang’ata is currently undergoing treatment and has been advised by doctors to avoid physically demanding engagements for approximately one month to allow for full recovery.

Despite the temporary setback, the county administration assured residents that service delivery and leadership functions will continue uninterrupted.

During the recovery period, Deputy Governor Stephen Munania will represent Kang’ata at official functions that require the governor’s physical presence.

In instances where necessary, the County Executive Committee Member for Finance, Prof Kiarie, will handle designated assignments as directed, it stated.

The county also confirmed that the governor will remain actively involved in running county affairs through virtual platforms.

“Official meetings via online will continue from Monday,” the statement added, noting that Kang’ata will maintain oversight of county operations remotely.

The Nutrition International meeting that the governor attended is part of ongoing partnerships between Murang’a County and development agencies aimed at improving maternal and child nutrition, strengthening public health systems and addressing malnutrition.

The county has been implementing several community-based nutrition initiatives in collaboration with the organisation and other partners.

The administration appealed for calm and assured residents and stakeholders that all county programmes, projects and services will proceed as planned during the governor’s recovery period.

“Murang’a County Government appreciates the continued prayers and goodwill from residents and stakeholders,” the statement said.

“We wish the Governor a speedy recovery.”

Kang’ata, who has maintained a busy public schedule since taking office, is expected to resume full physical duties after the one-month recovery period, subject to medical clearance.

Meanwhile, county leadership reiterated its commitment to continuity, stability and effective service delivery.
