The disturbing videos circulating online of a Russian national recording intimate encounters with Kenyan women should alarm us all.
They raise urgent questions about consent, privacy and national dignity.
No foreigner or Kenyan has the right to record and distribute intimate images without clear, informed consent.
The right to privacy and human dignity is enshrined in our constitution and protected under laws addressing cybercrime and data protection. The alleged actions in these clips, whether involving Kenyans or others, violate those principles and demand legal accountability.
We have seen in the past how foreign predators exploited underage Kenyans, and this sparked national outrage. But abuse of adults is also unacceptable. Exploitation does not become legitimate simply because someone is over 18. Adults make choices, but they must be informed choices, not ones engineered by manipulation or secrecy.
This scandal reveals gaps in awareness about digital consent, and it reminds us that consenting to a conversation or a cup of coffee is not consenting to be filmed, marketed or monetised.
But we cannot ignore personal responsibility. The digital world is unforgiving. Once images are online, they are almost impossible to erase. Do not trade your dignity for fleeting attention, gifts or promises. Protect yourself and ask questions. Walk away if something feels wrong.
The government must also act decisively. Authorities should enforce data protection and cybercrime laws without fear or favour. They must also liaise directly with YouTube, TikTok and Facebook to remove exploitative content swiftly. Platforms should not profit from humiliation.
Our people’s dignity matters more. Hospitality should never mean vulnerability. Whether local or foreign, anyone who abuses trust and privacy must face consequences.
