The Kenya Airline Pilots Association (KALPA) has expressed concern over ongoing flight disruptions linked to industrial action by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU), including Air Traffic Control personnel.

In a statement, KALPA said the industrial action has caused significant operational challenges at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and across the country’s airspace.

The association noted that flight delays, diversions, and cancellations have led to inconvenience for passengers and other stakeholders in the aviation sector.

KALPA emphasised that safety remains the overriding priority for pilots. Captain Murithi Nyagah, General Secretary and CEO of KALPA, stated that “Aviation safety is non-negotiable.”

The association raised concerns about the potential impact of the disruptions on crew scheduling and rest.

According to Captain Nyagah, “We are concerned that the ongoing disruptions may adversely affect crew scheduling and rest, thereby increasing fatigue risk.”

KALPA underscored the need for strict compliance with regulatory safeguards designed to protect flight safety.

Captain Nyagah said, “strict adherence to established Flight Duty Period (FDP) limitations and mandatory rest requirements is essential.”

He added that “These regulatory safeguards exist to mitigate fatigue and ensure that flight operations are conducted within internationally accepted safety parameters.”

The pilots’ body cautioned against allowing operational pressures to interfere with safety limits.

“Under no circumstances should operational pressures be allowed to compromise these limits,” Captain Nyagah said.

While acknowledging the challenges facing the aviation sector, KALPA called for dialogue as the preferred path to resolving labour disputes.

Captain Nyagah noted that “labour matters are best resolved through constructive, good-faith dialogue.”

He stressed the importance of engagement among all parties to reach lasting solutions.

“Meaningful engagement among all parties is essential to address outstanding issues and achieve mutually beneficial and sustainable solutions,” he said.

KALPA also warned that approaches that hinder negotiations risk prolonging disruptions. Captain Nyagah observed that “Approaches that frustrate negotiations or entrench positions only lead to avoidable stalemates and further disruption to the industry and the travelling public.”

The association reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and safety despite the ongoing difficulties. Captain Nyagah said KALPA remains committed to professionalism, safety, and constructive industrial engagement.

He added that the association’s focus is on supporting a stable, resilient and thriving aviation sector in Kenya.

The statement comes amid continued operational uncertainty affecting travellers and aviation stakeholders, as industry players monitor developments surrounding the industrial action and its impact on flight operations.
