Kenyan activist Mwabili Mwagodi was on Sunday arrested and detained at the Lunga Lunga Border Police Post after immigration officers allegedly blocked him from leaving the country.
The officials cited a Red Notice said to have been placed on his passport earlier this year, Mwagodi claimed.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Mwagodi claimed he was travelling to Dar es Salaam when immigration officials intercepted him and informed him of the alert.
He claimed the notice had been issued around January or February 2025 by an officer attached to the Serious Crimes Unit of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), based at Mazingira House along Kiambu Road.
According to Mwagodi, the officer allegedly failed to disclose the specific offence or formal charge linked to the purported warrant.
He further claimed that he was being held at Lunga Lunga Police Station as officers awaited instructions from DCI headquarters.
The activist claimed that both the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and a DCI officer visited his holding cell on February 16 and confirmed they were still awaiting guidance on how to proceed.
Efforts to obtain a response from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations regarding the alleged Red Notice and the basis of the detention were unsuccessful by press time.
Other police officers had claimed he was a danger in Tanzania.
Mwagodi’s latest arrest comes months after he was reportedly abducted in Dar es Salaam under unclear circumstances.
He disappeared on July 23, 2025, while travelling by public transport in Tanzania, where he worked in the hospitality sector.
His phone was switched off, and his family was unable to trace him. When relatives sought assistance from the DCI, the agency reportedly declined, citing jurisdictional limitations.
Human rights activist Hussein Khalid of Vocal Africa supported the family in demanding answers during the four-day ordeal.
Mwagodi was later found abandoned in Kinondo, Kwale County, after being missing for four days.
The circumstances surrounding both the alleged Red Notice and his previous disappearance remain unclear.
