Shujaa and Lionesses will be keen to kickstart the HSBC World Sevens Series Division Two on a positive note when action starts at Nyayo Stadium today.

The teams will hope to lay down a marker on home soil with further stops in Uruguay and Brazil next month before the World Championship finale.

A strong start will give them the momentum heading into next month, where tickets to Division One for the 2026-2027 season are up for grabs.

The tournament will be played on a round robin format.

Shujaa pitched a pre-tournament camp in South Africa while the Lionesses went to Spain.

Kevin Wambua’s Shujaa open their campaign against Canada at 10:50 am in what will be a tricky contest.

The tactician has a strong side to choose from, which includes the versatile John Okoth back from a long injury layoff alongside regulars George Ooro, playmaker Samuel Asati and powerhouse forward Kevin Wekesa.

Canada won the Division Three leg in Dubai in January, beating Belgium 28-10 in the final and will rely on the likes of Harry Corkum, Kal Sager and Morgan di Nardo.

Wambua said they have done the analysis of their opponents and have prepared adequately for the encounter.

“They are a physical side, well-structured in their play and very strong in the set piece,” said Wambua.

The hosts will then face off against Belgium at 1:52 pm. Even though they remain an unknown quantity, Wambua observed, “We have done analysis on their play. They are fast and physical and so we’ll have to be wary of them,” noted Wambua.

Shujaa will then renew rivalry with Germany in the final pool match at 4:54 pm.

On Sunday, they face Uruguay (12:50 pm) and the USA (5:02 pm). Lionesses under the tutelage of Simon Odongo begin their quest for the title with a match against Brazil at 9:44 am before a blockbuster showdown against China at 12:46 pm.

They then face champions South Africa in an African derby at 3:48 pm. On Sunday, the Lionesses will face Argentina at 11:44 am and complete the proceedings with a tough test against Spain at 3:56 pm.
