Ivan Ludiali ina recent action/ HANDOUTWestern Jaguars captain Ivan Ludiali and head coach Mike Malungu have attributed the club’s steady rise to the summit of Kenyan hockey to strict training discipline and a well-balanced squad.
Fresh from lifting the 2024–2025 KHU Men’s Premier League title, the Kakamega-based side has underlined its status as one of the country’s most consistent outfits.
The Jaguars enjoyed an impressive campaign, going unbeaten at one stage and finishing with eight wins and a draw from nine matches. They scored 29 goals and conceded just 11 for a +18 goal difference, edging traditional rivals Butali Warriors to the crown.
Ludiali said the triumph has only raised the bar within the squad. “Winning the league showed what we are capable of as a team, but it also means every opponent will come harder against us. Our focus is to keep the standards high in training and matches so we can remain at the top,” he said.
Their dominance has been building over recent seasons. In 2022, the Jaguars went on a nine-match unbeaten run to climb to joint second place on 24 points from 13 matches—a streak widely seen as the turning point in their evolution into genuine title contenders.
Malungu believes the team’s off-pitch structure has played a crucial role in translating potential into results. “We have maintained a structured programme where players continue working on their individual technical skills at club level, while team training focuses on strength, agility and endurance because those are the demands of top-level hockey,” said the coach.
The tactician has also blended experienced players with younger prospects from the junior national ranks, a strategy aimed at sustaining competitiveness both locally and in continental assignments.
“As senior players, we have to guide the younger ones and help them adapt to the demands of top-flight hockey. The goal is to keep improving as individuals and as a team so that we can compete for every trophy available,” added Ludiali, a national team regular.
On the continental stage, the Jaguars have made their mark, including a commanding 13–0 victory over Malawi’s Parachute Battalion at the Africa Cup for Club Champions, where Ludiali netted a hat-trick.
In the ongoing campaign, the champions remain firmly in the title mix. They have recorded notable wins — 5–3 over Kenya Police, 6–1 against Daikyo Heroes and 4–1 versus Strathmore Gladiators — alongside a 3–3 draw with Nairobi Sikh Union to stay within the leading pack.
With a core of national team players and a squad grounded in recent title-winning experience, Malungu insists consistency and fitness will determine their trajectory.
“We have the quality and depth, but success will depend on how disciplined we are throughout the season. The target is to stay competitive in the league and push strongly in continental assignments,” he said.
