An impromptu tour of parts of Siaya county by a section of Orange Democratic Movement leaders drew mixed reactions from residents, after a group of rowdy, intoxicated youths attempted to disrupt their speeches.
The ODM officials, led by Siaya Governor James Orengo, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, were en route to Busia for a rally when they were forced to cut short their speeches in Ugunja town as placard-waving youths repeatedly shouted “Ruto two term” during the address.
The leaders, who had landed at Gombe Airstrip on the outskirts of Siaya town, headed straight to Ugunja, skipping Siaya town, where Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi had assembled local youths at the Siaya Scouts Centre for an impromptu rally.
Atandi urged residents to support President William Ruto and shun leaders he accused of seeking to block the President’s bid for a second term.
He said Alego Usonga had recently concluded a national identity card registration exercise in which more than 10,000 people acquired the document and registered as new voters.
“This will help President Ruto to secure his second term,” he claimed, dismissing the opposition for misleading Kenyans with false promises.
In Ugunja, a section of the youth said their priority was development rather than what they termed empty rhetoric.
Henry Oluoch Owino from Ugunja constituency echoed the call, criticising local leaders who oppose government participation.
“Our request is simple; we need development and empowerment for our people. The only thing Baba Raila Odinga left us is this government, and we must remain steadfast in it,” Owino said, addressing the media in Siaya shortly after the ODM team left.
His sentiments were supported by Ugunja constituency ODM youth leader Joseph Juma and William Otieno, who claimed that youths in the area were fully behind President Ruto.
