Sprint sensation Danson Kibet is determined to make a lasting impact in the 400m as he targets a maiden appearance for Team Kenya this season.
The 23-year-old youngster has been steadily carving out his place in the one-lap event on the national circuit, building momentum with each outing.
On January 17, his efforts paid off when he secured a podium finish at the second Athletics Kenya (AK) track and field weekend meeting at Thika Stadium.
Kibet clocked 46.9 seconds to finish third, behind Kelvin Kipkorir, who won in 45.8 seconds, and Allan Kipyego, who placed second in 46.4 seconds.
After opening his 2026 campaign on a solid note, Kibet said he is confident of a strong season. “I am hoping for the best this season,” Kibet said. With the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the African Championships in Ghana on his radar, the 23-year-old knows consistency in training will be crucial.
“I need to focus on my speed and ensure I give my all in training to achieve my goals,” he added. Kibet also stressed the importance of following his coach’s guidance as he prepares for a demanding year. “I will follow my coach’s programme and take in his advice because I know what he says will be key to sharpening me,” he said.
Reflecting on his Thika performance, Kibet expressed relief at returning to action after a minor injury. “I had a slight injury, but now I can say I am back to full fitness,” he stated.
Last year brought mixed results for Kibet as he continued to gain experience at the top level. During the National Athletics Championships at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in June, he narrowly missed the final after clocking 46.83 for fifth place in the semi-finals.
George Mutinda (44.51), Brian Tinega (44.67) and Kipkorir (44.80) later swept the podium in a fast final.
Kibet also featured in a relay highlight at the fourth Betika BingwaFest meeting at Ulinzi, teaming up with Moses Wasike, Hesborn Ochieng and Elkana Sabila to clock 40.4 seconds and finish second in the men’s 4x400m.
