Kenyan media personality Ciru Muriuki, widely known to her followers as 'The Millennial Mentor', has sparked a heated online conversation.
In a video posted to her Instagram account, she addressed what she calls the "biggest lie" the world tells young women.
At nearly 44 years old, Muriuki used her platform to challenge long-standing societal expectations regarding marriage, behaviour, and the rewards of the patriarchy.
The Myth of Bitterness
Muriuki began her address by tackling the stereotype of the "bitter" older woman. She noted that society often labels older, unmarried women as bitter to dismiss their perspectives. However, she argues that this "bitterness" is actually a form of clarity.

"I’ve understood the source of that bitterness," Muriuki said in the clip.
She explained that the anger many older women feel stems from realising they were sold a false narrative about how the world works.
"Young ladies, please listen to us, girlies. The scales have fallen from our eyes. That's why we're so angry, because we have been sold a lie. We've been told lies."
Debunking the 'Good Girl' Reward
A central theme of her message was the rejection of the idea that being "well-behaved" or "agreeable" leads to success.
"We've been sold the lie that if we are well behaved, the patriarchy will reward us. It will not. We have been sold the lie that marriage is where you will find fulfillment and happiness. And in a lot of cases that is the case, but in a lot of cases that is not the case either,” she added.

Muriuki told her audience that women are often taught that if they follow the rules of the patriarchy, they will be rewarded. She stated firmly that this is not the case.
She also challenged the notion that marriage is the only path to fulfillment. While acknowledging that marriage can bring happiness for some, she warned that it is not a universal solution for all women.
The Power of Audacity
Instead of politeness, Muriuki encouraged young women to embrace being disagreeable. She observed that in her four decades of life, the women who actually achieve their goals are often those who refuse to wait for permission.

"Let me tell you as a woman in my 40s, the women that I have seen getting what they want are the mannerless ones, those with no manners. Be as disagreeable as possible if even if it enters your heart to say that's okay," she told her followers.
She urged women to be "audacious" and to "rebuke" the spirit of simply being okay with things that do not serve them.
"Be a troublemaker because the women that I am seeing that are making it in this life are the mannerless, audacious women."
Ciru Muriuki is a prominent figure in East African media. She has previously worked as a presenter and producer for major outlets, including the BBC. As 'The Millennial Mentor', she often shares unfiltered advice on career, life, and social issues.
Her latest video joins a growing global trend of women in their 40s using social media to deconstruct traditional gender roles.
While Muriuki did not provide specific statistics, her message reflects a shifting demographic in Kenya.
