PIPSSA Kenya coordinator Mark Gaya said athletics, just like swimming, is steadily gaining momentum among young athletes. He said the association is proud to work with schools and clubs to nurture talent early.

He explained that many schools now have athletics clubs within their set-up, and the progress is being boosted by elite athletes such as Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, who has been helping schools form professional athletics clubs.

Omanyala, through his foundation, has already partnered with institutions including Merishaw and Crawford International School, in a move that continues to inspire schools to invest in structured programmes.

“This is a season for sport, growth and exposure,” Gaya said. “We want our students not just to compete, but to see and learn from the champions they admire.”

In addition to athletics, PIPSSA Kenya will organise competitions in football and skating this term to provide opportunities for student-athletes.

The season will culminate in the PIPSSA Kenya Inter-County Sports Tournament on March 7 at St Christopher’s School in Nanyuki.

The event will bring together schools in a festival of sport featuring football, swimming, basketball, skating, taekwondo, chess and modern dance.

The Nanyuki tournament will combine competition with tourism, allowing teams and families to enjoy one of Kenya’s most scenic regions, known for its cool climate and proximity to Mount Kenya.
