Scores of political and community leaders have been visiting the home of Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago to mourn his mother, Mama Esther Lelei.
She died last Friday at Eldoret Hospital while undergoing treatment and will be buried on next week Tuesday.
“She was a pillar in my life, and I thank God for the time He gave her to be with us. She mentored us as a family and many others,” Mandago said.
Her death comes amid rising political tensions in the county between two camps — one led by Mandago and the other by Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and Governor Jonathan Bii.
The differences, largely over performance since the last elections, had previously kept leaders from attending the same functions.
In a show of unity, leaders from both camps have since visited Mandago’s home to offer condolences.
Visitors included Bii, Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, neighbouring governors, MPs and community leaders.
Governor Bii expressed sympathy, noting that Mama Esther’s life was marked by compassion, strength and devotion to family and community.
“We stand with the family in prayers and support during this difficult time,” he said.
MPs David Kiplagat (Soy) and Julius Rutto (Kesses) also mourned her passing. Rutto described her as a source of unconditional love and guidance and prayed for God’s comfort for Mandago’s family.
Senators Samson Cherargei (Nandi) and William Kisang (Elgeyo Marakwet), alongside Governor Wisley Rotich, sent messages of condolence, honouring Mama Esther’s legacy.
