Citizen TV news anchor Immanuel Ndung’u has opened up about a personal encounter with a boda boda rider on a day marked by transport chaos in Nairobi.
The charismatic journalist shared his experience via a TikTok video filmed behind the scenes at the Royal Media Services studios.
The incident occurred on Monday, 2nd February. This was the same day that matatu operators across the capital staged a major strike.
The operators were protesting what they described as an increase in cases where boda boda riders torch vehicles following road accidents.

The Incident on the Way to Work
Ndung’u shared the details while preparing for the 9 pm news bulletin. In the video, he is seen interacting with colleagues, including newsreader Trevor Ombija, while getting ready for the broadcast. He revealed that he was struck by a motorcycle earlier that afternoon.

"I got hit by a boda boda this afternoon on my way to work," Ndung’u told his colleagues.
The anchor expressed frustration over the rider's reaction. Rather than offering assistance, the rider reportedly became confrontational before fleeing the scene.
"The guy hits me, starts complaining when it was his fault, and then rides away. What am I meant to do?" he posed.
Tensions in the Transport Sector
The timing of the accident coincided with a period of high tension in Nairobi's transport industry. Matatu operators withdrew their services on Monday to demand better security and regulation of the boda boda sector.
The strike left thousands of commuters stranded. The protesters claimed that "boda boda gangs" often take the law into their own hands after collisions, sometimes setting matatus on fire before the police can arrive.
Focusing on Road Safety
Despite the incident, Ndung’u continued with his professional duties. The evening’s news programme was set to tackle the very issues he had faced on the road.
The guest list for the broadcast included high-ranking officials responsible for transport and security.
Among them were the CEO of the Federation of the Public Transport Sector and a Senior Superintendent of Police from the Road Safety Zone.
Ndung’u noted that the police official was taking the day's events very seriously as they prepared to go live.
While the anchor did not report any serious injuries in the video, his experience highlights the daily risks faced by road users in the city.
