Kenyan professional golfer Naom Wafula will make her debut on the Sunshine Ladies Tour this week in South Africa.
Wafula qualified for the prestigious series following a consistent showing during the inaugural season of the Sunshine Development Tour East Africa Swing, which serves as a pathway to the Sunshine Ladies Tour.
She left Kenya on Sunday and will compete as the only East African.
Wafula will tee off at the SuperSport Ladies Challenge, scheduled for February 4–6 at Humewood Golf Club. The 54-hole tournament has a prize purse of R1.3 million (Sh10.4m) and will feature 56 professional golfers from 15 countries, among them South Africa, Canada, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Scotland, Finland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Czech Republic, Swaziland and the United States Virgin Islands.
Wafula said the Sunshine Development Tour East Africa Swing helped prepare her for the step up.
“I feel well prepared going into my first Sunshine Ladies Tour event. Playing on the Sunshine Development Tour gave me regular competitive golf and exposure to strong fields, which helped me understand what is required at the next level,” she said.
Sunshine Development Tour East Africa Swing Chairman Peter Gacheru said Wafula’s progress reflects the tour’s objectives.
“Naom’s debut on the Sunshine Ladies Tour is exactly what the Sunshine Development Tour was created to achieve. She earned this opportunity through consistent performance and merit,” said Gacheru.
After the SuperSport Ladies Challenge, Wafula is scheduled to compete in further Sunshine Ladies Tour events, including the NTT Data Ladies Pro-Am (February 13–15) at Fancourt Montagu, the Standard Bank Ladies Open (March 5–7) at Durbanville Golf Club, and the Jabra Ladies Classic (March 11–13) at Killarney Country Club.
Her season will also include the Platinum Ladies Open (March 18–20) at Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Estate, the Absa Ladies Invitational (March 26–28) at Royal Johannesburg, the Joburg Ladies Open (April 16–19) at Randpark Golf Club, the Investec SA Women’s Open (April 23–26) at Royal Cape Golf Club, and the MCB Ladies Classic (May 1–3, 2026).
Wafula is the first Kenyan golfer to earn a playing card on the Sunshine Ladies Tour.
