Police officers from Kendubay Police Station in Homa Bay County have arrested one suspect and seized 2,353 rolls of marijuana during an operation at Achuodho Beach.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the officers were on routine patrol when they acted on a tip-off from members of the public regarding suspected drug trafficking activities in the area.
“The information indicated that a tuk-tuk, believed to be ferrying bhang, had been seen offloading sacks at a rental house in the area,” the National Police Service said in a statement.
Officers swiftly responded to the report and conducted a search of the premises, where they recovered four sacks of cannabis sativa suspected to have been prepared for illegal distribution.
The suspect was taken into custody and is being held at Kendubay Police Station pending processing and arraignment in court.
The recovered narcotics were secured at the same facility as investigations continue.
The NPS commended both the public for sharing timely intelligence and the officers involved for their swift response, noting that community cooperation remains critical in combating drug-related crimes.
In a separate incident in Machakos County on January 24, police recovered a large quantity of suspected narcotics after a suspect fled and abandoned a bag during a routine patrol at Ekalakala Market.
The National Police Service said the incident occurred on January 23 when officers from Ekalakala Police Station noticed a man behaving suspiciously while carrying a large bag.
“Upon spotting the officers, the suspect abandoned the bag and fled, evading arrest,” the police statement said.
A subsequent search of the abandoned bag revealed 49 brooms and seven kilogrammes of suspected cannabis, as well as 25 packets of rolling papers, items believed to be associated with the preparation and distribution of illegal drugs.
Police are investigating to identify and apprehend the suspect, as well as any accomplices linked to the consignment. Officers said the seizure dealt a blow to drug supply chains operating in the area and underscored the importance of routine patrols in disrupting criminal activities.
Meanwhile, in Mombasa County, detectives arrested two suspected drug peddlers following a coordinated raid in Utange, within Kisauni sub-county.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the operation targeted a residential house in Barawa area, which was fenced with a large perimeter wall and suspected to be used for drug trafficking.
“In a coordinated raid, officers drawn from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) and Kiembeni Police Station arrested the two suspects, bringing their alleged trade to a halt,” the DCI said in a statement.
During a thorough search of the house, officers recovered several sachets of heroin hidden in two bedrooms. Further search led to the discovery of another package of heroin buried in a hole at a corner of the compound, indicating efforts to conceal the drugs from law enforcement.
