National Secondary Schools rugby 15s champions Vihiga Boys are among the top schools that have confirmed participation in the annual Amadi Open Tournament set to take place this weekend at Maseno School.

The multi-discipline tournament has attracted a strong field, with organisers describing it as a near-national championship due to the quality and number of schools expected.
Tournament coordinator Caleb Olang’o said several institutions that regularly dominate regional and national competitions have signed up.
“This will be like a national championship because schools that consistently feature at the regional and national level will be here,” said Olang’o.

Former national secondary schools football and rugby 15s champions Kakamega High School will also be in action, alongside St Mary’s School Yala, Butere Boys, Sawagongo High, Menengai High, Friends School Bwake, Agoro Sare, Sigalame High, Maranda High and Ambira High.
Olang’o, who is also the Maseno School Director of Sports, revealed that more than 60 teams are expected to compete across various disciplines, with some schools fielding teams in all sports.
“We have more than 60 teams taking part, and some schools will be competing in every discipline on offer,” he said.
To accommodate the large number of participants, Maseno School has secured extensive facilities for the tournament. These include 10 football pitches, six basketball courts, eight handball courts, six hockey pitches, 10 volleyball courts and five rugby pitches.
Elsewhere across the region, several other open tournaments will be held this weekend as schools intensify preparations for the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term One games, scheduled to begin in mid-February.
Butere Girls, Musingu Boys, Kisii School and Our Lady of Mercy Ringa Boys are among the institutions hosting parallel competitions, with schools using the events as crucial build-up fixtures.
At Mbita, national secondary schools netball champions Oyugi Ogango are expected to headline the Mbita Open Tournament. Coordinator Kennedy Atanga said other strong teams such as Upper Hill School, Katolo High, Homa Bay High, St Joseph’s Rapogi and Orero Boys have also confirmed participation.
Meanwhile, Kisii School will host one of the biggest open tournaments this weekend, with matches set to be played at the school, Kisii University and nearby institutions.
Tournament coordinator Peter Omwansa said the high number of teams necessitated the use of multiple venues.
“Because of the large number of teams, we have made arrangements with neighbouring institutions. So far, 60 schools have confirmed participation,” said Omwansa.
The Kisii School tournament has attracted sponsorship from Nyanza Sports Vibez, Indomie, ICEA Lion and Coca-Cola.
