The Ministry of Education has confirmed the deaths of two teachers and a learner in two separate road accidents in Nairobi and Nyeri counties earlier today.
In Nairobi, tragedy struck at the City Primary School in Ngara when a public service vehicle rammed into a group of teachers participating in union elections.
One teacher died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
Up to 26 others were injured and are currently receiving treatment, according to the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Migos Ogamba.
“The news is heartbreaking. On my behalf and that of the Ministry of Education, I extend my deepest condolences to the families, friends and relatives of the deceased,” said CS Ogamba in a statement.
“We pray that God grants them strength and fortitude during this difficult time.”
Police confirmed the vehicle involved appeared to have lost control before colliding with pedestrians.
Nairobi police commander George Seda said the death toll could rise as several of the injured sustained multiple injuries.
Witnesses at the scene described seeing bodies on the ground as rescue teams worked to assist the victims.
Meanwhile, in Nyeri County, a van carrying 25 learners from Mahehe Friends Academy and Aberdare Academy lost control, resulting in the death of one learner.
Nineteen injured learners were rushed to Nyeri County Referral Hospital for treatment. The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that rescue operations were ongoing at the scene to reach those who may have remained trapped.
CS Ogamba said the Ministry is working closely with several agencies to respond to both incidents.
“We are coordinating efforts with the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the Ministry of Health, the Teachers Service Commission, and the two County Governments to manage these sorrowful developments,” he noted.
He also called on drivers and other road users to exercise caution.
“We call upon drivers and other road users to exercise due care and adhere to traffic rules and protocols for the safety of everyone,” CS Ogamba said.
The Ministry has expressed prayers for the quick recovery of those injured. Families and schools affected are being supported as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accidents.
These incidents come amid heightened concern over road safety in the country, especially for school children and teachers.
In Nairobi, witnesses reported the driver of the public service vehicle appeared to lose control before veering into the group of teachers. In Nyeri, emergency responders are still working to ensure all learners are safely rescued from the accident site.
The Ministry of Education has urged communities to remain vigilant and prioritise safety on the roads to prevent further tragedies.
