The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has intensified its campaign against mobile phone theft, targeting suspected receivers across the country.
Detectives are pursuing key figures believed to fuel organised theft rings.
In a recent operation, officers launched a targeted raid following forensic leads on a suspected receiver of stolen devices in California, Kamukunji Sub-County.
Two of his alleged accomplices had already been arrested last week, with a large cache of stolen phones seized, some reportedly destined for Uganda.
During the raid, the suspect escaped on a motorbike after sensing the presence of detectives. In the process, he dropped a black carrier bag containing three packages, each wrapped in yellow cellotape.
When opened, the packages were found to hold 62 assorted stolen mobile phones, demonstrating the scale of the operation.
The recovered phones have been secured as exhibits, and detectives are continuing their search for the suspect and his remaining accomplices, who are still at large.
The DCI described the operation as part of a broader, intelligence-led effort to dismantle mobile phone theft syndicates.
“Through sustained, intelligence-led operations, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains unwavering in its commitment to dismantle mobile phone theft syndicates by targeting not only the thieves but also the receivers who fuel this criminal enterprise,” the agency said in a statement.
The crackdown aims to disrupt the networks that profit from stolen devices and reduce the prevalence of mobile phone theft nationwide.
Members of the public are being urged to assist in the investigations. Tips can be reported anonymously via the DCI toll-free line at 0800 722 203 or through WhatsApp at 0709 570 000. “Usiogope!” the agency advised, encouraging citizens to come forward without fear.
This latest pursuit follows a major January 26 operation in Nairobi’s Central Business District, where detectives recovered more than 900 suspected stolen mobile phones.
Two suspects were arrested after intelligence-led operations along Charles Rubia Street, a known transit point for parcels bound for upcountry routes and neighbouring countries.
“Upon opening the packages, the officers were greeted by a shocking sight: an assortment of stolen mobile phones, numbering approximately 900,” the DCI said in a statement.
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects are part of a well-organised syndicate targeting members of the public and mobile phone shops across Nairobi.
The crackdown aims to disrupt the networks profiting from stolen devices and reduce mobile phone theft nationwide.
