The High Court in Eldoret has warned it may cancel the bond terms of a police constable accused of fatally shooting a 22-year-old college student in Kitale.

Justice Reuben Nyakundi issued the warning to constable David Omondi, who is charged with the murder of Dolphine Mwangi, after the prosecution accused him of threatening and interfering with key witnesses in the case.

Omondi was last year released on a Sh1 million bond, but the court said it would not hesitate to revoke the bond if he disobeys orders to refrain from contacting or intimidating witnesses.

“I caution you that I will not hesitate to cancel your bond if you go against the court’s orders to refrain from interfering with witnesses in this matter,” Nyakundi said.

The warning followed claims the accused had been spotted visiting the scene of the incident at Naree shopping centre in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia county, where he allegedly threatened some witnesses.

Through the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, several witnesses have petitioned the court to review Omondi’s bond terms, citing fears for their safety.

IPOA told the court the accused had been meddling with state witnesses to scare them away from testifying and urged stern action for breaching bond conditions.

Nyakundi directed Omondi to keep away from the scene of the incident.

Omondi denied the murder charge and claims of witness interference, saying his movements were known to his relatives and area chief.

According to police records, Omondi—who was attached to the Quick Response Team under the Trans Nzoia county police commander—allegedly shot Mwangi on October 21, 2025.

He is said to have fired two shots into the air before a third bullet struck the student, killing her. Prosecutors allege he later dragged her body and dumped it on the Kitale–Kapenguria highway.

The murder trial is scheduled to begin on February 4.
