West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin has expressed satisfaction with his administration’s performance in transforming the county’s health sector.
Speaking on the progress of his administration, Kachapin said healthcare remains a top priority, citing the development of more than 11 additional county health facilities as a key achievement.
He said the 11 new dispensaries have significantly improved residents’ access to quality health services.
The new facilities are in Tartar, Soka, Kaplelachkoror, Opol and Chongis. Expansion works are ongoing at Chepareria, Sigor, Kabichbich and Kacheliba sub-county hospitals.
“These new facilities, together with the expanded hospitals, have greatly improved access to health services, especially in previously hard-to-reach areas. Residents can now walk to nearby facilities whenever they need medical attention,” Kachapin said.
To strengthen service delivery, the county has recruited more than 400 healthcare workers. The governor said West Pokot now has enough doctors and specialists to meet the county’s healthcare needs and urged residents to use local facilities.
Kachapin made the remarks while flagging off a Sh75 million consignment of essential medicines for distribution to all county health facilities.
The shipment, the largest received since the current administration took office, reflects improved efficiency and a strengthened partnership between the county government and the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa).
The governor said the county had cleared all pending bills with Kemsa, including Sh65 million for the second quarter. This enabled the smooth release of third-quarter supplies now being delivered to hospitals across the county.
Health and Sanitation executive Claire Parklea said more than 99 per cent of ordered drugs had been delivered, ensuring health facilities are adequately stocked. She urged health managers to take responsibility for proper storage, distribution and use of medicines.
Parklea added that the county would closely monitor supplies to ensure they reach the intended facilities.
Governor Kachapin warned that strict action would be taken against anyone found misusing county drugs, stressing that public resources must benefit residents.
To ensure accountability, inspection teams will verify that facilities are well stocked and that medicines are used appropriately.
“There will be strict monitoring at all health facilities to ensure drugs are properly used and hospitals effectively serve residents,” he said.
