Siaya to host national para-athletics trials

The Kenya National Paralympic Committee (KNPC) will hold the 2026 national para-athletics trials at the newly constructed Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya on Friday and Saturday.

KNPC will conduct the trials in collaboration with the Siaya County government.

These trials serve as the primary selection ground for the national squad that will represent Kenya in a series of high-stakes events, including the 2026 World Para Athletics Grand Prix circuit to be held in Rabat, Morocco, and Tunis, Tunisia, regional championships and upcoming International Paralympic Committee (IPC)-sanctioned events.

The two-day championship is open to educational institutions, including primary and secondary special schools, colleges, and universities.

Others expected are registered sports clubs, community-based para-sports groups, county-sponsored para-athletes and independent individuals, said a statement from KNPC.

"This is a golden opportunity for our athletes to prove their mettle on a national stage. We are not just looking for seasoned veterans, but for the next generation of talent currently in our schools and colleges," said a representative from the Local Organising Committee.

The trials will feature a comprehensive range of track and field disciplines. A critical component of the event will be the national classification exercise, which ensures that athletes are grouped fairly according to the impact of their impairment on sport performance, following IPC international standards.

The County Government of Siaya has committed to providing logistics, security, and accessibility features to ensure a seamless experience for all competitors and spectators.

Interested teams and individual athletes are encouraged to begin their registration through their respective county sports offices or directly through the KNPC portal.

The Kenya National Paralympic Committee (KNPC) is the national body mandated to develop and represent para sports in Kenya. The committee promotes inclusion, talent identification, and high-performance pathways for athletes with disabilities, locally and internationally.
