The Kenya Institute of Special Education is conducting a fresh assessment of persons with special needs to update existing records and ensure they access quality education.

Kisedirector Norman Kiogora said the exercise would help the national and county governments focus on providing specialised support to persons with special needs, particularly in education.

“This exercise is critical as we plan how to improve the services and programmes that benefit those living with special needs,” Kiogorasaid.

Hundreds of Uasin Gishu residents with special needs have turned up for the ongoing assessment at the Chebolol Assessment Centre.

The exercise is being conducted by Kise in collaboration with the Uasin Gishu county government and Ministry of Education.

Gender and Social Protection chief officer Marion Birgen said the exercise forms part of the county’s efforts to support persons with special needs.

“An elaborate assessment is being conducted, and we are encouraged by the high turnout of persons with special needs,” Birgensaid.

Once the assessment is complete, Kise will provide guidance on the most appropriate interventions, including placement in suitable schools and institutions.

Birgen further said that the county has intensified awareness campaigns targeting persons with special needs, describing the initiative as key to effectively addressing their challenges. She urged parents and guardians not to hide children living with special needs.

“No one with special needs should be hidden. Everyone should come forward, register and access government support.

She added that Governor Jonathan Bii’s administration is keen to increase resources for expanding and supporting institutions for persons with special needs.

“As a county, we are also ready to work with other development partners to provide the necessary support for our people with special needs,” she said.

Kiogora said the national government plans to support the development of the Chebolol centre.

“The national government is keen on inclusion matters, which is why President (William Ruto) is committed to supporting such facilities,” Kiogora said. He added that the government would also ensure that facilities benefiting children with special needs are expanded and modernised to provide quality services.

“Institutions such as schools for children with special needs have been provided by the government, and there are ongoing programmes to expand and equip such facilities,” he said.

He added that Kise would work with all counties to maintain a sustained focus on persons living with special needs.
