The Raila Amollo Odinga International Stadium is now 85 per cent complete, as Kenya steps up preparations for hosting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has said.

Mvurya said the stadium’s progress underscores Kenya’s readiness and capacity, alongside the PAMOJA partner countries, to successfully host the continental tournament in line with the vision of President William Ruto.

He was speaking after conducting an inspection of the facility together with his Defence counterpart Soipan Tuya.

The Sports CS said the team was impressed by the steady progress of works at the stadium, noting that the contractor is working round the clock to finalise external works and training facilities by the end of February.

He said this will pave the way for subsequent auxiliary works to be undertaken seamlessly.

During the visit, Mvurya also reviewed the progress of seven other key projects that are critical to the successful delivery of AFCON 2027.

He said all the projects are at advanced stages of construction.

The CS said the government has firmly invested in a whole-of-government approach to ensure comprehensive preparedness for the tournament, even as Kenya advances towards preparatory engagements with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in the near future.

The inspection was attended by Principal Secretaries Elijah Mwangi (Sports) and Dr Patrick Mariru (Defence), Senior Assistant for Sports Evans Achoki, MOD Brigadier Sokobe, Sports Kenya Director General Timothy Kilimo, chairperson Hon Mark Lomunokol, and other senior government officials.
