The 2022 Commonwealth Games 10,000m silver medallist Daniel Ebenyo is plotting a golden upgrade over the 25-lap distance as he sets his sights on this year’s Club Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Ebenyo settled for second place at the Birmingham Games in 27:11.26,  behind Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo, who took gold in 27:09.19. Kenya's Kibiwott Kandie rounded up the podium in 27:20.34.

Ebenyo’s renewed ambition follows his return to the track at the Western edition of the Betika BingwaFest, where he made his first track appearance of the season, winning both 5,000m and 10,000m to make an early statement of intent. Over 5,000m, Ebenyo (13:54.5) led Amason Kiren (14:09.0) and Dennis Kipkoech (14:10.02) to the podium.

The momentum carried seamlessly into the 10,000m, where Ebenyo was once again in red-hot form, dominating the 25-lap contest in 28:57.1. Robert Kiprop finished second in 29:15.1, and Victor Kipruto finished third in 29:16.0.

Buoyed by his sharp return to track racing, Ebenyo is bullish about making his second appearance at the Commonwealth Games, where he hopes to execute a demanding but calculated distance double. “I am looking forward to going to the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, where I will be doubling in both 5,000m and 10,000m,” Ebenyo said.

The distance runner, who shifted his focus to the roads during the 2025 season, stressed the importance of re-acclimatising to the track as he builds towards the championship season. “This was my first track session for the year, and it was good. I have been away from the track for some time,” he noted.

Ebenyo has already enjoyed an explosive start to his 2026 campaign. On January 10, he clocked 28:45 to secure bronze at the World Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida. Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo (28:18) claimed gold, while Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi (28:36) settled for silver. His 2025 season was equally eventful.

Ebenyo dominantly opened the year by winning the National Cross Country Championships in Eldoret in 30:48 before stamping his authority at the Sirikwa Classic, where he clocked 29:57. He endured a brief dip in form at the Seoul Marathon, finishing 10th in 2:10:21, but bounced back strongly with a second-place finish at the Boilermaker 10K in 28:23.

His second marathon outing of the year saw him place 13th at the Chicago Marathon in 2:07:52 before rounding off the season with a solid showing at the National Cross Country Championships, finishing strongly in the senior men’s 10km race in 30:12.

With Glasgow firmly in focus, Ebenyo has relayed his hunger to strike gold on the global stage. “I have silver from Birmingham 2022, from the World Championships, the World Road Running Championships and another at the African Championships. I also have bronze from the World Cross Country. It has been an honour for me,” he said.

In 2023, Ebenyo claimed silver over 10,000m at the World Championships in Budapest, clocking 27:52.60. He added another silver to his growing collection later that year at the World Half Marathon Championships in Riga, Latvia, where he clocked at 59:14. Ebenyo is also the 2022 African Championships silver medallist over 5,000m after clocking 13:38.79.
