At least 27 police recruits are currently receiving treatment at Mathari Mission Hospital following a Friday morning road accident along the Marua-Chaka Road in Kiganjo, Nyeri County, that claimed the life of one trainee.
According to police, the recruits were jogging on the left side of the road when a vehicle, a Toyota Fielder, veered off the road and struck them.
Preliminary reports indicate the driver had earlier failed to stop when directed by officers before the collision occurred.
The deceased, a 24-year old male, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
Medical staff described the injuries as ranging from minor to serious, but stable.
Following the incident, the driver was arrested and detained as investigations commenced.
The body of the deceased recruit was moved to the mortuary pending a postmortem examination, while the vehicle involved was impounded for inspection.
Police said traffic officers from Nyeri have launched investigations to establish the exact circumstances leading to the crash, including the speed of the vehicle and whether other traffic violations were involved.
Authorities said a more detailed progress report would be issued as investigations continue.
The number of fatalities from road accidents this month has risen to nearly 300, police said. More than 600 people have been reported injured in crashes so far, and many are receiving treatment at various health facilities.
Kenya is currently running a campaign to address the high number of road accidents. Officials said close to 5,000 people died in separate accidents in 2025.
Authorities have identified reckless overtaking, speeding and drunk driving as leading causes of road accidents, despite sustained public safety campaigns by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
They also cited mechanical failures from poorly maintained vehicles, including worn tyres and faulty brakes, as significant contributors.
Officials said poor road conditions, such as potholes, confusing signage and inadequate lighting, also increase the risk of crashes.
