Governor Jonathan Bii drives a grader to commission the NYS upgrade of roads in Uasin Gishu county

The National Youth Service (NYS) has rolled out a road improvement programme in Uasin Gishu county, targeting over 700km of rural and urban roads.

Governor Dr Jonathan Bii commissioned the project in Sinonin, Soy subcounty, saying the initiative aligns with his agenda to transform the county’s economy.

The programme, implemented in partnership with NYS, involves grading and gravelling the targeted roads, many of which were damaged by last year’s heavy rains. Work is expected to be completed before the next rainy season.

Speaking at the launch, Governor Bii reaffirmed his commitment to infrastructure development as a catalyst for improved livelihoods, agriculture and trade.

“Under ‘Nguzo 6,’ we aim to continually improve all roads and foster economic growth and better livelihoods for all residents,” he said, assuring equitable implementation across all wards.

Deputy governor Evans Kapkea urged the NYS team to remain focused, describing the initiative as a major transformative infrastructure programme for the administration.

NYS Assistant Commandant General Philip Koech assured residents that the project will be implemented without bias, delivered on time and provide value for money.

County Assembly members, including leader of the majority Julius Sang and Soy MCA Isaac Chirchir, praised the programme’s potential to enhance prosperity across Uasin Gishu.

Roads, Transport, and Public Works executive Abraham Serem highlighted the urgency of completing the works before the onset of heavy rains, while residents welcomed the initiative and urged MCAs to support the programme with adequate funding.

Governor Bii said the project aims to ensure smooth access across the county, particularly for farmers and businesses.

“Our main objective is to rehabilitate and complete roads before the heavy rains, meeting our targets within the set timelines,” Serem said.

To support the initiative, NYS will deploy six graders, six excavators and 36 tippers, dividing the teams into three lots, each equipped with 12 tippers, two excavators, two graders and one roller.
