A police officer was found dead in his official house at Ahero Police Station in Kisumu County, in an incident that is under investigation.

Police identified the officer as Constable Solomon Anukuri.

According to colleagues, he had previously mentioned experiencing stress related to personal matters, police said.

His body was discovered inside his house after colleagues became concerned when he failed to respond to repeated phone calls.

One officer said he went to check on him and found the door locked from the inside.

Other officers later gained entry into the house and found the officer unresponsive.

Police said preliminary observations indicated no signs of a struggle.

Authorities said no note was recovered at the scene.

The body was moved to a mortuary pending a post-mortem examination and other procedural requirements.

Police said investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

The incident comes amid ongoing efforts within the police service to address mental health challenges affecting officers.

Officials say such challenges cut across different ranks within the service.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has previously said any case related to mental health among officers should receive immediate attention.

According to police officials, factors that may contribute to stress among officers include the demands of the job, financial pressures, family challenges, frequent transfers and working far from support networks.

Authorities have also noted a rise in incidents involving police officers, which they have linked to mental health concerns within the service.

Police officials say officers are routinely exposed to traumatic situations in the course of their duties.

In response, police authorities have rolled out counselling services, while the National Police Service Commission has established a dedicated unit to support officers.

The unit is tasked with evaluating needs and coordinating outreach programmes aimed at mental health and substance abuse prevention.

Officials say officers often operate under difficult conditions as they respond to a wide range of community challenges, sometimes at personal risk.

The World Health Organisation has previously cited various social and economic pressures as contributing factors to mental health challenges globally, noting the importance of early intervention and support systems.
