It’s a truth universally acknowledged that the Kenyan police force is a band of criminals on government payroll masquerading as a civil law and order force hired to stop crime.
The tragic truth shows up from time to time in the form of youths shot and killed for breaking no law. Or people maimed and made to carry their scars for the rest of their lives.
And when they are not shooting and maiming the innocent, they are collecting bribes and running rackets like all criminals do. Their audacity stinks of official approval. Their impunity drips from powers higher up.
Take the case in Nandi Hills where a couple of young men, most likely jobless, were whiling away time with a game of pool. What happened in Nandi Hills happens in just about every trading centre, large or small.
The police, in their now officially endorsed methods, ambushed the youths and set about beating them up much the same way criminals would attack targets.
What followed was half-hearted censure from Inspector General Douglas Kanja and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
Instead of arrest, prosecution or interdiction, the establishment hopes the public will quickly forget so normal service can roll on uninterrupted.
