MTV Shuga Mashariki cast.

The MTV Staying Alive Foundation (MTV SAF) has announced that production for the second season of MTV Shuga Mashariki will begin later this year, with the new season set to premiere in early 2026.

The country manager, Kenya at MTV SAF, Mitchelle Kimathi described the show’s return as more than a simple relaunch.

“The return of MTV Shuga Mashariki is more than a relaunch; it is a revival of authentic Kenyan storytelling that speaks directly to youth and some of the challenges that they face,” she said.

“We are excited to continue engaging in bold storytelling that will allow traditionally uncomfortable conversations to happen as we challenge restrictive norms by tapping into creative content to amplify the voices, realities and ambitions of young Kenyans through powerful and relatable narratives told through homegrown creators.”

The announcement follows the success of the show’s 2025 relaunch, which captivated audiences across Kenya and beyond.

The first season of MTV Shuga Mashariki proved both popular and impactful as it combined bold storytelling with authentic Kenyan voices to spark conversations on issues affecting young people.

According to the production team, the series was broadcast nationally in Kenya and internationally on BET, and it garnered over 2.8 million views on YouTube.

They said the social media engagement was strong, with more than 81,000 interactions on Instagram and TikTok, highlighting the series’ reach among digitally active youth.

The first season featured a strong ensemble cast, including Serah Wanjiru, Basil Mungai, Matthew Ngugi, Fatuma Gichuru, Julie Brenda, Fridah Mumbe, Mariam Bishar, Makena Kahuha, and Wilson Muchemi.

Their performances helped cement the show as both a platform for fresh talent and a defining cultural touchpoint in Kenya.

Beyond its entertainment value, the series is part of MTV SAF’s broader efforts to drive social change.

The show is included in the Surround Sound Kenya Programme, which seeks to open conversations on gender norms and their impact on young people’s lives.

Alongside the show, MTV SAF introduced the Sema Nami support chatbot, which allows young audiences to access confidential services on topics including mental health, crisis support, gender-based violence, depression, and emotional distress.

The Executive Director of MTV SAF Wame Jallow, emphasised the foundation’s mission to use storytelling as a tool for social impact.

“At the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, our mission has always been to use the power of storytelling to shift attitudes and inspire behaviour change around critical health and social issues. Through the MTV Shuga franchise, we’re not just entertaining but igniting conversations that lead to real, lasting impact,” Jallow said.

He added, “We’re proud to once again feature an exceptional Kenyan-led team of directors, cast, crew and producers in the upcoming season, reaffirming our commitment to stories that reflect the truths, challenges and hopes of young people as they navigate their unique and often complex journeys.”

The success of the 2025 season reflected a broader appetite for content that speaks to youth realities.

It reignited conversations around love, ambition, peer pressure, sexual health, consent, mental health, well-being, and gender-based violence.

The show has since become a vital platform for educating and empowering young people, demonstrating how youth-led storytelling can influence societal attitudes.

"MTV SAF is also extending opportunities to young Kenyan musical talent through the 25Flow music program. Emerging artists can submit original music for consideration as part of the soundtrack for season two," they said.

The program, in collaboration with local producer So Fresh, includes mentorship for selected artists, giving them a chance to see their work featured on the show.

"Season two of MTV Shuga Mashariki will continue to be produced entirely in Kenya, with a focus on authentic stories created by and for Kenyan youth," the team said.

The production team noted that closed auditions are currently underway for select roles, and production is expected to start later this year.

“Fans of the show are already revisiting season one while speculating on returning cast members and directors. The first season’s blend of entertainment and social impact underscores a growing trend in Kenyan media: using creative content to spark meaningful conversations among young audiences,” they said.

By tackling sensitive topics in relatable ways, the show has proven that storytelling can drive change while remaining engaging.

They further said that MTV Shuga Mashariki remains committed to being a platform where young people can see their experiences reflected on screen.

“Its Kenyan-led production model demonstrates the country’s capacity for high-quality content that resonates locally and internationally. As the show prepares for its return, it promises to continue blending gripping drama with bold themes, while providing a space for Kenyan youth voices to be heard and amplified,” the team said.

The upcoming season is not just a continuation of a story as it represents a sustained effort to challenge restrictive norms, empower young people, and showcase the talent and creativity emerging from Kenya.

With a Kenyan-led team at the helm, season two of MTV Shuga Mashariki is poised to make a significant cultural impact when it hits screens in 2026.
