Comedian YY has reacted after an anonymous woman alleged online that they have been dating for 3 months and that he does not allow her to go through his phone.

Responding to the “ask me anything” feature on an unmentioned page but reposted by YY, an anonymous woman claimed that she has been seeing YY romantically for 3 months but he doesn’t let her touch his phone.

She additionally claimed that he has brought up marriage, but she felt confused because of the phone privacy issue as well as a “mhesh” who is providing for her.

The story quickly sparked controversy online, with people suggesting that there could be some truth to the claims, while others are of the belief that it’s a feigned attempt to troll YY.

YY shared the story as a screenshot on his Instagram, posing a question as to whether “Kenyans have gone mad”.

His reaction made the story sound laughable and a far cry from the truth.

Conveniently, the story broke out shortly after YY’s publicly-shared single status, after a string of high-profile relationships and breakups.

The inflammatory statement came from the “NGL: anonymous q&a”, a third-party fixture on Instagram that allows users to anonymously ask questions, share comments, and for the original posters (OPs) to respond to what has been sent to them and upload on their Instagram stories.

Ironically, the anonymous woman’s reference to YY “not allowing her to use his phone” has contributed to a greater conversation of phone privacy being a touchy subject in modern relationship dynamics and discussions.

Choosing YY as her subject also included the conversation of celebrity dating scandals and infidelity suspicions.

However, the story seems to have many holes, from YY’s reaction to the lack of evidence: no photos, screenshots, or verifiable details were shared.

Subsequently, many have questioned the intention of such an anonymous message.

YY is a renowned stand-up comedian, actor, director, and TV host known for appearances on Churchill Show, NTV, and his "What It Takes" comedy specials.

He has openly expressed his views on relationships in interviews, more so reflecting on his personal affairs with ex-partners like Marya Okoth and Noela Toywa.

While talking to Betty Kyalo, YY highlighted the essence of peaceful communication as a foundation of trust. He mentioned that he looks for a partner “who can hold a conversation, and be able to reach an agreement without an argument”.

He added that he remains single because he has not found “the one”, but he is “actively searching for a life partner”.

Looking at the bigger picture, Kenyans online chose to focus on phone privacy to be a healthy boundary, disregarding the credibility of the story shared by the anonymous woman.

They dove into social media trends that are now seeping into trust in dating and the great “red and green flags” debate.

Others commended YY for shutting down the baseless rumours.

Sceptics and drama-enthusiasts, on the other hand, pointed to possible drama brewing.
