Athletics Kenya (AK) senior vice president Paul Mutwii has revealed that the federation plans to hold a two-week high-performance training camp in Miramas, France, as part of preparations for the World Indoor Championships scheduled for March in Poland.
Speaking to the Star, Mutwii said AK will stage its indoor trials on January 30–31, an early selection aimed at giving Team Kenya sufficient time to adapt to the demands of indoor competition.

The trials will feature selected track events—60m, 400m, 800m and 3,000m, and field events — high jump, pole vault, long jump and triple jump.
“On January 30–31 we will have our selection for the team that will represent us at the World Indoor Championships in Poland,” said Mutwii. “We want to identify the athletes early and expose them to indoor tracks before the championships.”

According to Mutwii, AK will work with the government and officials in Miramas to facilitate the camp, which he believes will be key to improving Kenya’s medal prospects.
“We need to take the athletes to Miramas for about two weeks so they can familiarise themselves with indoor facilities,” he said.
He said that indoor athletics presents unique technical challenges compared to outdoor.
“Indoor track is different. It is shorter and more curved, so it requires a higher level of technical understanding,” Mutwii noted.
He also encouraged athletes with the means to independently seek exposure to indoor competition.
“Athletes who are able should find ways to familiarise themselves with indoor events,” he said.
The trials will be by invitation only, with global rankings playing a central role in selection.
Kenya will be eager to improve on recent indoor performances. The country failed to win a medal at the 2025 World Indoor Championships in China, while its only podium finish at the 2024 edition in Glasgow came through Beatrice Chepkoech, who won bronze in the women’s 3,000m.
Despite the recent struggles, Mutwii is optimistic about Kenya’s prospects in Poland.
“This year, we have started well in cross country and track and field. We expect strong performances at the Indoors,” he said.
He also expressed confidence in Kenya’s growing strength in field events.
“Traditionally, we haven’t taken many field athletes, but now we are seeing real improvement,” Mutwii added.
