Police in Kisumu have arrested two suspects, a Kenyan and a Ugandan, after intercepting a lorry carrying a large consignment of bhang in Ahero.

"The driver sped off but was pursued and intercepted at Ngere. In the vehicle were 23 packs of bhang. Both the driver and a Ugandan passenger are in custody,” the police statement said.

The seizure comes a week after another major bust in Nairobi’s Nyamakima area, where traffic police arrested a lorry driver and a co-driver found with 14 sacks of cannabis sativa.

On January 14, detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit also seized heroin worth Sh1.19 million in Nakuru.

A 42-year-old suspect was arrested while riding a motorcycle carrying suspicious luggage.

The search revealed 397 grams of heroin, two syringes and needles, ten rolls of bhang, and three packets of cigarettes, cutting short what investigators described as an active drug supply run.

The new development comes amid a high-profile drug trafficking case before the Shanzu Law Courts in Mombasa County.

Six Iranians have been charged in court with the alleged trafficking of a massive consignment of methamphetamine valued at approximately Sh8.2 billion.

The accused are linked to the seizure of 1,036.044 kilograms of methamphetamine, intercepted in October 2025 during a high-stakes multi-agency maritime operation off the Kenyan coast.

Security officers intercepted a stateless dhow in the Indian Ocean, leading to the arrest of the six.

All six accused persons pleaded guilty to the charges after the formal reading of the charges, but disputed the quantity of narcotics cited in the charge sheet, which they say was less than 800gms.

The court ordered that the suspects be remanded at Shimo La Tewa GK Prison pending the reading of facts, scheduled for January 30, 2026.

The case highlights the unwavering resolve of Kenya’s security agencies to dismantle transnational narcotics networks and protect the nation from the devastating effects of illicit drugs.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks through sustained operations and multi-agency collaboration.

The seizures coincide with an ongoing crackdown on illicit brews across the country, which has led to the seizure and destruction of thousands of litres of illicit and contraband liquor.

Police stressed a zero-tolerance approach to traffickers, regardless of status, in pursuit of a safer, drug-free Kenya.
