A one-and-a-half-year-old girl died in an electrocution incident at a house in Etago, Kisii County, police said.

According to police, the child is believed to have come into contact with a cooking coil that was switched on inside the house.

Her mother told officers that she had stepped out briefly after leaving the child asleep and later returned to find her lying unconscious on the floor.

Police said the child had visible injuries on her hands, which are believed to have been caused by contact with the electric coil during the Thursday evening incident.

The body was moved to a mortuary pending a post-mortem examination and further investigations.

Elsewhere, a 40-year-old man died in a borehole in Mayanja village, Bungoma County, while attempting to rescue a colleague who had become trapped while cleaning the well.

Police said the deceased, identified as Edward Naliakho, entered the borehole to assist the colleague, who had gone in to remove debris believed to have been affecting the water supply.

According to police, Naliakho managed to rescue the colleague but later complained of breathing difficulties while attempting to come out.

He is reported to have fallen back into the borehole and became trapped.

His body was later retrieved by county fire brigade personnel and moved to a mortuary pending further procedures, police said.

And a man died at a gold mining site in Macalder, Migori County, after a mining shaft collapsed on January 15, 2026.

Police said they were alerted to the incident after it had occurred. The deceased, identified as Willis Odero, 20, sustained chest injuries after being struck by falling rocks, according to police and witnesses.

The body was moved to a mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

This is among several mining-related incidents that have been reported in the area in recent months, police said.

And a man was shot and killed during an operation along the Kenya–Somalia border, police said.

Police said the incident occurred on Thursday along the Khalalio–Mandera Road in the Bella area during an operation targeting suspected smuggling activities.

The deceased was identified as Abdisa Dasta, 22, whom police said is believed to be of Ethiopian nationality.

Police said an autopsy was conducted before the body was released for burial.

Elsewhere in Kadzandani area, Mombasa County, a suspect was shot and seriously injured during a confrontation with police.

Police said officers confronted suspects at a hideout on Thursday morning, leading to a confrontation. One suspect sustained a gunshot injury to the chin and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Three other suspects were arrested, police said, adding that investigations are ongoing.
