
Police and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) are investigating the death of a suspect found in a cell toilet at the Kerugoya Law Courts.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
The deceased, identified as John Kinyua, 40, had appeared in court for a disturbance-related charge.
He was arrested in Kibingo on Tuesday, detained overnight, and presented in court the following day.
Kinyua pleaded not guilty and was returned to the cells pending a pre-trial hearing scheduled for January 19, 2026.
Kinyua was held with about 20 other detainees awaiting transfer to Kerugoya Prison when officials found him unconscious on the cell toilet floor.
He was rushed to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The cause of death is currently unknown, and authorities are conducting an investigation.
The body has been moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
Court officials said the matter is under investigation and they had no comment to make.
Separately, police in Awendo, Migori County, are investigating the death of a 53-year-old woman, Jane Auma, whose body was found in River Kwar, Kware village.
Police and residents reported that Auma had injuries on her left leg and face and a rope around her neck. She was last seen in the area on January 10.
The body has been taken to the mortuary for autopsy, and authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
In Kiminini, Bungoma County, police are investigating the drowning of a 12-year-old boy in River Nzoia. Officers reported that the boy’s body showed signs of prolonged submersion.
The body was discovered on Wednesday, January 14, and has been moved to the mortuary pending identification and autopsy. Authorities are working to establish the circumstances of the drowning.
