Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja/SCREENSHOTNairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has commended the Dawoodi Bohra Community for their innovative approach to food management, highlighting a system that ensures zero food wastage within their campus.
Speaking during a meeting with community members in Karen, Nairobi, on Friday, Sakaja expressed admiration for their dedication to resourcefulness and sustainability.
“The first time I came here, I was amazed that there is zero wastage of food, even chapati, in this campus. There is a team in charge of finishing food,” Sakaja said.
He explained that every day, a designated group ensures all meals are consumed, transferring leftover food from the sufuria to individual plates so that nothing is discarded unnecessarily.
Sakaja described the approach as a practical demonstration of discipline, foresight, and communal responsibility.
He noted that other institutions could learn from this model to curb food wastage in schools, workplaces, and social gatherings.
“Every day there is a group whose work is to finish the food from the sufuria to the plate,” he continued.
Sakaja said the Dawoodi Bohra Community had taught him valuable lessons on discipline and appreciation of food, which he encouraged President William Ruto to embrace as well.
Referring to the President’s fondness for chapati, he joked that the community’s food culture leaves a lasting impression.
“If you thought you would run away from chapati, you will not; it will haunt you. Next time you have lunch, take a pinch of salt before you start and finish with a pinch of salt,” he remarked.
The governor highlighted how even simple habits, such as being careful with food portions and finishing meals, reflect a broader culture of responsibility and sustainability embedded in daily life by the community.
Sakaja emphasised that the Dawoodi Bohra Community’s approach goes beyond preventing food wastage.
He suggested that other institutions and households could adopt similar practices to instill values of mindfulness, discipline, and respect for shared resources.
He hailed the community for setting an example of how thoughtful, consistent habits can make a meaningful impact—not only on sustainability but also on nurturing discipline and a sense of collective responsibility within society.
