Apple and Google have announced a major multi-year collaboration that will see the next generation of Apple Foundation Models built on Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models and cloud technology, marking one of the most significant partnerships yet between the two technology giants.
In a joint statement, the companies said the collaboration will underpin future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized version of Siri expected to roll out later this year.
The move signals Apple’s intention to accelerate its artificial intelligence roadmap by leveraging Google’s advanced AI capabilities while retaining control over how the technology is deployed across its ecosystem.
“Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology,” the joint statement said.
For consumers, the companies say the immediate impact will be felt through enhanced Apple Intelligence features, with a more capable and personalized Siri among the first visible outcomes of the collaboration later this year.
The companies added that the models will play a central role in delivering new user experiences across Apple’s platforms.
Apple said the decision followed an extensive evaluation of available AI technologies, with Gemini emerging as the strongest foundation for its ambitions.
“After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google's AI technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users,” the statement said.
The partnership comes at a time when competition among global technology firms to develop and deploy advanced AI systems is intensifying.
By aligning with Google’s Gemini models, Apple is positioning itself to compete more aggressively in areas such as conversational AI, on-device intelligence, and personalized digital assistance.
Despite the collaboration, Apple emphasized that it will continue to prioritize user privacy and security, a core pillar of its brand.
The company said Apple Intelligence will still operate primarily on Apple devices and through its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.
“Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple's industry-leading privacy standards,” the statement said.
The collaboration is also expected to reduce the time and cost required for Apple to bring advanced AI features to market, particularly as consumer demand for smarter, more intuitive digital assistants grows.
While neither company disclosed financial details or the full scope of the agreement, both signaled that the partnership will span several years and evolve as AI technologies advance.
