In a recent episode of the Daddy X Mo Podcast, Kenyan gospel veteran Daddy Owen and popular media personality DJ Mo discussed the personal costs of public scandals.

The two industry giants shared vulnerable accounts of how media storms impacted their mental health, marriages, and careers, revealing the dark side of life in the limelight.

DJ Mo’s ‘Two-Day’ Nightmare

DJ Mo recalled a specific scandal that broke while he was out for lunch with his wife. As notifications began to flood his phone with screenshots and allegations, he described a physical reaction to the stress.

"You feel like your stomach is tied to your oesophagus," he explained, adding that the weight of the phone felt suddenly heavy.

The pressure was so intense that the couple decided to check into a hotel room rather than return home. DJ Mo revealed that he was so mentally drained and overwhelmed that he hadn't showered for two days.

"I forgot how I was feeling... It’s like I was sweating but not sweating. I didn't shower for two days."

The ‘Illuminati’ Rejection in Schools

While DJ Mo dealt with personal allegations, Daddy Owen shared a "mother of all scandals" involving claims that his music was linked to the Illuminati.

The veteran singer, who has been in the industry for over 20 years, recalled a traumatic school mission in Nairobi where he was the surprise guest artist.

Expectant of the usual high school pandemonium and cheers, Owen was met with a chilling silence. As he took the stage, the students stood up one by one and walked out of the hall.

A teacher later explained that a pastor had spent the weekend telling the students that Owen's songs, his hair colour, and his dance moves were demonic.

The pastor had even produced DVDs claiming that Owen was an agent of the Illuminati sent to recruit students.

How Owen Fought Back

To deal with the accusations, Daddy Owen took several practical and emotional steps:

• Verifying Word Meanings: He sought out linguistic experts to confirm that his lyrics in Lingala, such as the words in "Tobina" and "Kapungala," had no hidden demonic meanings.

• Developing a ‘Thick Skin’: Owen admitted the incident initially made him want to quit music, but he eventually used the "storm" to build a "thick skin" for future challenges.

• Choosing Silence: Rather than engaging in a public shouting match, Owen often opted for silence. He argued that explaining yourself to the public often provides "the other party another chance" to distort the narrative.

"If you never understand my silence, you will never understand my words."

Ultimately, both men agreed that while scandals are "draining," they serve to "mold" a person into a stronger version of themselves.

They cautioned other public figures to be wary of blackmail, advising that paying off extorters only turns a celebrity into a slave.
