KCB RFC head coach Andrew Amonde believes the mid-season acquisitions of Richel Wangila and Sheldon Kahi will significantly strengthen his squad as the Kenya Cup resumes this weekend.

Speaking on Wednesday, Amonde said the duo—both Kenya Simbas trialists—will add valuable depth to a title-chasing side eager to reclaim the Kenya Cup crown for the first time since 2021.

“They are young, energetic players who have had time with the Simbas and were outstanding performers at Quins. We are building depth as we head into the business end of the season,” said Amonde.

However, the former Kenya Sevens skipper was quick to point out that no player is guaranteed a starting berth.

“They will not be automatic starters. They must earn their places in the squad. Their arrival will create healthy competition in the outside backs, which is a positive for the technical bench,” he added.

The Thika-Roadside outfit has also bolstered their ranks with the signings of Richard Liva from Impala, Michael Odhiambo from Daystar Falcons, as well as unattached players Owen Otieno, Bernard Omukati, Kevin Sikutwa and Nelson Meaki.

KCB resumed training late last month during the festive period, using the break to sharpen tactical execution and improve efficiency in both attack and defence ahead of the league restart against Nakuru RFC.

“We came back a bit early to improve certain facets of our game and to ensure the new signings are aligned with our game plan and structure. The goal is to fire on all cylinders until the end of the season,” Amonde noted.

Despite emphatic wins in their opening three matches—thrashing Impala 87-5, Kisumu 41-10 and Strathmore Leos 72-14—Amonde warned his charges against complacency.

“We are yet to be properly tested. Tough matches are coming up, and we cannot drop our guard just because of our strong start. I want to see how the boys respond when put under pressure,” he said.

The nine-time champions face Nakuru RFC away on January 10 before hosting Quins on January 17. They will then take on varsity side Blak Blad on January 24 and wrap up the month with a stern test against Nondescripts on January 31.
