ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has called on Kenyans to commit to the ideals and reforms championed by the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Sifuna urged renewed dedication to multiparty democracy, justice, and equity—values cherished by the former Prime Minister.
This comes as the country comes together to celebrate Raila’s birthday posthumously.
Sifuna said it has been difficult for many to come to terms with his passing.
However, he added that the nation should use the occasion to pause, reflect deeply, and express gratitude while celebrating the life of one of Kenya’s most iconic leaders.
“The 80 years Raila lived represent a sum total of courage, sacrifice, and an uncompromising belief in freedom and justice—a pursuit he neither wavered from nor relented in.”
In a statement, Sifuna described Raila as a national icon whose life embodied courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to freedom and justice.
"Jakom, it is nearly three months since you left. Your absence reminds us how deeply we need your guidance. On your birthday, we pause not just to mourn, but to reaffirm our commitment to the principles you stood for,” he said.
Sifuna warned that Raila’s death has left Kenya vulnerable to regression, citing threats to multiparty democracy and rising intolerance.
He highlighted Raila’s pivotal role as the father of Kenya’s second liberation, the new constitution, and devolution—reforms meant to decentralise power and promote equitable distribution of resources.
“Multiparty democracy was designed to ensure free expression and respect for political diversity. Baba’s insistence on protecting the integrity of political parties remains a lesson we must uphold,” Sifuna said.
He called on Raila’s mentees, political followers, and all Kenyans to lead a renewed political and civic movement aligned with the Constitution, defending the oppressed, promoting social justice, and keeping the spirit of reform alive.
“On his birthday, we renew our dedication to his ideals, defend his legacy from distortion, and continue the path he charted for the nation,” Sifuna said.
He stated that Raila’s life serves as a constant reminder that true leadership is measured not by titles held, but by the truths defended and reforms advanced.
