The government has initiated the process of hiring substantive heads for two major road agencies, nearly six months after the former chiefs left office.
The vacancies for Director General positions at the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) have been advertised, with applications closing on 12th and 13th January 2026, respectively.
Successful candidates will serve for five and three years in KeNHA and KeRRA, according to the public notices.
KeNHA’s advert states: “The Authority invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the following position on contract terms of up to five (5) years (subject to legal review) or as otherwise provided under any written law, renewable subject to performance and mandatory retirement age.”
In addition to the Director General, KeNHA is seeking to fill the positions of Deputy Director (Legal and Board Services) and Assistant Director in charge of Land Valuation and Administration on permanent and pensionable terms.
KeRRA’s advert reads: “Pursuant to provisions of the Act, the Board of Directors invites applications from suitably qualified Kenyan citizens for the positions listed.”
Alongside the DG, KeRRA is recruiting for 17 senior positions, including Director Internal Audit, Deputy Director-Roads, Deputy Director-Enterprise Management, Deputy Director-Planning, Deputy Director-Legal Affairs, Deputy Director-Survey, Deputy Director-Supply Chain, Deputy Director-Research, and Deputy Director-Administration.
The former Director Generals, Eng. Kungu Ndungu of KeNHA and Eng. Philemon Kandie of KeRRA, left office on July 12, 2025.
Following this, KeNHA appointed Eng. Luka Kimeli as Acting DG, while KeRRA appointed Eng. Jackson Magondu in an acting capacity.
Before his acting appointment, Magondu served as Director in charge of Planning, Design, and Environment. Eng. Kandie officially assumed office as Director General of KeRRA on 13th April 2022, after serving in an acting capacity from 6th July 2020.
His five-year contract was set to end on 12th April 2027, but he submitted his notice on 11th July 2025.
In his resignation letter to the board chairperson, Eng. Kandie stated: “This letter serves as a formal notification of my resignation from the position of Director General at Kenya Rural Roads Authority, giving a notice of three months effective 11th July 2025, with my last day of employment being 10th October 2025.”
