Nyeri Catholic Archbishop Anthony Muheria/Catholic MissionNyeri Catholic Archbishop Anthony Muheria has urged Kenyans to embrace simplicity and togetherness this festive season.
This is as he cautioned against excessive indulgence in food, drink, and materialistic pursuits.
In a message shared on Christmas, the Catholic cleric encouraged citizens to focus on the true essence of the holiday: family, hope, and compassion.
“May you have a very good Christmas. Celebrate it in a good way, not sinning, not overeating, overdrinking or overindulgence but celebrate it with over happiness of being together as a family, well together,” Bishop Muheria said.
Muheria emphasised that the holiday should be marked by meaningful interaction with loved ones rather than by extravagance.
“Christmas is a time when the birth of the Messiah pushed away the darkness,” he said, highlighting the spiritual significance of the season.
He described the holiday as an opportunity to sustain hope, uplift one another, and reflect on the values that underpin society.
Bishop Muheria also encouraged Kenyans to cultivate authenticity, empathy, and compassion in their daily lives.
“If only Kenyans can embrace their authenticity, transparency, empathy, care and compassion and at the same time avoid any kind of hidden motives that seek self-gratification or selfish profits,” he said.
“We would see a more united and caring society.”
According to the cleric, Christmas provides an ideal occasion for generosity, urging citizens to share whatever they have with those in need.
“Every Kenyan should take the opportunity to share what they have,” he said, stressing that even simple acts of kindness can have a profound impact on families and communities.
Bishop Muheria’s message was echoed by other religious leaders across the country, who have used the festive season to remind the faithful about the importance of humility, ethical living, and community support.
The bishop also urged families to use the festive season to strengthen bonds and reconnect, particularly after a challenging year.
He highlighted that moments spent together in honesty and love outweigh material gifts, saying that the joy of family togetherness is central to the holiday spirit.
He concluded his message by encouraging Kenyans to maintain hope and optimism, drawing inspiration from the birth of Christ.
The festive season, he notes, should be a reminder that light can overcome darkness and that compassion and generosity should guide everyday actions.
As Christmas celebrations sweep across the country, Bishop Muheria’s call serves as a timely reminder to keep the focus on meaningful interaction, selflessness, and spiritual renewal, rather than succumbing to the pressures of extravagance and excess.
