Former Likunyani MP, Enoch Kibunguchi/HANDOUTNational Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has paid tribute to the late former Likuyani MP, Enoch Kibunguchi, describing him as a devoted and principled leader whose service left a lasting impact on his constituents and the wider Western Kenya region.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Wetang’ula expressed profound sorrow at the sudden passing of Kibunguchi, who died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Eldoret.
“I have received with profound sorrow the news of the passing of former Likuyani Constituency Member of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Enoch Kibunguchi,” Wetang’ula said.
He added that the leader's life was marked by humility, compassion, and steadfast service, highlighting his dual distinction as both a medical professional and a legislator.
Wetang’ula hailed him as a diligent member of the National Assembly who consistently championed the welfare of the people of Likuyani.
“During his tenure in the National Assembly, he was a diligent and principled Member who consistently championed the development agenda and the welfare of the people of Likuyani,” the speaker noted.
He further acknowledged the late MP’s contributions to public life and the advancement of healthcare and leadership in the region, saying that these achievements would be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
Wetang’ula also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Kibunguchi's family praying that the God grants them strength and comfort during the difficult period.
"I convey my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Likuyani and the wider Western Kenya region and I pray that the Almighty grants them strength and comfort as Dr. Enoch Kibunguchi rests in eternal peace," he concluded in his tribute.
The former MP’s passing has also prompted questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
The family has called for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of his sudden demise.
The family says Kibunguchi had been in good health until about ten days ago, when he complained of severe stomach pain and was rushed to an Eldoret hospital, where he also operated a clinic.
According to the family, medical tests detected food poisoning and a blood infection, after which his condition steadily worsened. By last Friday, he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Kelly Wakubengo, an uncle to the deceased, said the food poisoning was unusual, noting that doctors were unable to neutralise the pain for a prolonged period.
“The doctors really tried, but the poisoning kept getting severe and came with other complications, including kidney failure,” he said.
Kelly added that the effects of the poisoning continued to worsen, yet in normal circumstances, food poisoning is usually neutralised within a few days.
He said the family suspects that some substance may have been introduced into Kibunguchy's body through food or other means.
