Nairobi Majority Leader Peter Imwatok/FILELands Principal Secretary Nixon Korir has met members of the Nairobi County Assembly aligned to the broad-based government in Nairobi, in a move widely viewed as part of efforts to consolidate the Kenya Kwanza political base in the capital.
Korir, who represented President William Ruto, conveyed the President’s goodwill to the MCAs, announcing financial support amounting to Sh8 million as early Christmas facilitation.
Under the arrangement, South C MCA Abbas Khalif donated Sh2 million, Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Ken Ng’ondi Sh1 million and Nairobi Majority Leader Peter Imwatok Sh500,000.
Addressing the leaders, Korir emphasised that the President remains committed to working closely with Nairobi MCAs to ensure equitable development across all wards in the city.
“The President and his team are keen to ensure that no part of Nairobi is left behind. This government is deliberate about inclusive development,” Korir said.
In response, the MCAs lauded Ruto’s leadership and reaffirmed their support for the broad-based government, pledging to work together to deliver development to Nairobi residents.
“We are encouraged by the unity demonstrated by leaders in Nairobi, led by PS Korir, PS Raymond Omollo, Speaker Ng’ondi, Jateso and other leaders. They have shown us that through unity, we can achieve more for our people,” said one MCA.
The meeting underscored the growing cooperation between the national government and Nairobi County leaders as the administration seeks to strengthen its political foothold in the capital while accelerating service delivery.
Ruto has previously pledged to work closely with Nairobi MCAs in a bid to improve service delivery and address long-standing challenges facing the capital.
He has said cooperation between the national government and the county legislature is critical to unlocking Nairobi’s economic potential and improving the quality of life for residents.
He has emphasised that effective leadership requires unity of purpose rather than political rivalry. He noted that issues such as waste management, infrastructure, housing and public transport can only be addressed through coordinated efforts between county leaders and the national government.
The broad-based government is an inclusive system of governance that brings together leaders and political actors from different parties, regions and communities to share responsibility in running the country.
Its aim is to promote national unity, political stability and consensus-building, especially during periods of heightened tension or division.
By incorporating diverse voices in decision-making, a broad-based government seeks to reduce polarization and ensure that policies reflect the interests of a wider population.
Supporters argue that such arrangements enhance cooperation and service delivery, while critics caution that they can weaken opposition oversight and blur political accountability if not carefully managed.
