Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has unveiled a plan to equip more rural health facilities and improve access to quality healthcare services.

The county has 138 health facilities, and Governor Bii says his administration has made deliberate efforts to ensure they are well equipped and adequately stocked with drugs and staffed to meet residents’ needs.

So far, 20 health facilities have been upgraded and provided with additional staff to operate on a 24-hour basis, enabling residents to access medical services at all times.

Kapteldon Subcounty Hospital, one of the largest facilities in the county, is set to mark a major milestone in healthcare delivery, with Bii expected to officially commission a fully equipped X-ray unit.

“This is an investment that will significantly strengthen diagnostic services for residents of Kapseret subcounty,” health chief officer Paul Wangwe said.

The upgraded unit has already been installed and is ready for commissioning, marking a critical step towards improving access to timely, affordable and quality healthcare at the subcounty level.

Once operational, the X-ray facility will eliminate the need for patients to travel long distances to referral hospitals for imaging services, easing financial and logistical burdens on families.

County health officials have hailed the project as a game-changer, saying it will enhance early diagnosis, support accurate treatment and improve emergency care—particularly for accident victims, expectant mothers and patients with chronic illnesses. The unit is also expected to ease congestion at major referral hospitals by decentralising essential diagnostic services.

Governor Bii said his administration remains committed to investing in modern medical equipment, upgrading health infrastructure and ensuring equitable access to healthcare services across all subcounties.

Residents of Kapteldon have welcomed the development, describing it as a long-awaited intervention that will transform service delivery and improve health outcomes in the area.

Wangwe said the commissioning of the X-ray unit will usher Kapteldon hospital into a new era of enhanced diagnostic capacity, reaffirming the county’s people-centred healthcare.

At the same time, the governor assured residents that hospitals have been supplied with adequate drugs to ensure uninterrupted services during the Christmas season and beyond.

“Even as many people break for Christmas, we have ensured that all our hospitals will continue providing services because we have stocked sufficient drugs and supplies to last into next year,” he said.

He added that medical staff will remain on standby in all health facilities to serve residents as usual.
