Police said the body appeared to have been dumped elsewhere before being swept to the location where it was discovered.

The discovery was made on Wednesday, but police managed to retrieve the body the following day due to darkness and the depth of the site.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending identification and an autopsy. The motive for the killing is yet to be established, police said.

Meanwhile, two gold miners were killed after a shaft they were working in collapsed in Macalder, Migori County.

Two others were seriously injured in the Wednesday incident, police and locals said.

The group was working in a mining shaft when it collapsed and trapped them.

This is the latest such incident in the area amid calls for improved safety measures for miners.

Police said one of the deceased was a Tanzanian national who was working at the site.

The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures.

There has been a rise in deaths at mining sites across the country. The most notorious sites include Kakamega, Siaya, West Pokot and Vihiga.

Officials say they are running awareness campaigns to address the menace, despite resistance from some miners who view the sites as their only source of livelihood.

Mining remains popular among some locals despite the dangers it poses, officials said.

Several site managers are under investigation over incidents reported in the past year.

Elsewhere in the Holo area of Kisumu County, a woman was robbed of Sh300,000 belonging to a self-help group, where she serves as treasurer.

She reported that an unknown number of people raided her house and made away with a safe containing the cash and other valuables.

The safe was later recovered in Kisumu town by police officers on patrol.

One suspect was arrested and is assisting police with investigations.

Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
