Umayra Taghiyeva Deputy minister of ecology and natural resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan./HANDOUTThe Deputy Minister of Environment of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the country’s Ambassador to Kenya who is also Azerbaijan’s Representative to UNEP and UN-Habitat talked to the Kenyan media following the conclusion of the Seventh Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7).
Deputy Minister Umaira Taghiyeva highlighted Azerbaijan’s active engagement at UNEA-7 and reaffirmed the country’s dedication to solutions that address climate change, ecosystem protection, renewable energy, water management, and environmental innovation.
The engagement also looked ahead to the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13), scheduled to take place in Baku from 17 to 22 May 2026.
Co-organized by the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), WUF13 will convene global leaders, policymakers, urban planners, civil society, private sector actors and youth to discuss sustainable urbanization under the theme “Housing the world: Safe and resilient cities and communities.”
Ambassador Sultan Hajiyev underlined that COP29 hosted by Azerbaijan in November 2024, WUF13 as well as World Environment Day (celebrated in various countries annually on June 5 to promote action to protect environment globally) both to take place in Azerbaijan in 2026 reflect the country’s strong commitment and role in shaping global agenda on environmental protection and sustainable urban futures — issues that resonate strongly with Kenya’s own development and environmental priorities.
